Who can register to vote?

You can register to vote if you are a resident (usually live) in England and are aged 16 or over (but you will not be able to vote until you are 18). Note, there are different processes elsewhere in the UK

You must also be one of the following:

  • British citizen
  • Irish citizen
  • Commonwealth citizen (including Maltese and Cypriot) who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man, or who does not need permission

I don’t have a fixed or permanent address

You will need to give an address where you would be living if not for your current situation or an address you have lived in the past. If you are homeless, you can give details of where you spend a substantial part of your time. This could be a shelter or any place where you sleep or spend a large part of your day.

You will need to fill in this form on the Government website providing your full name, and if possible, your date of birth, nationality, and national insurance number, although this is not essential.

When do I need to register by?

The registration deadline is 5pm Tuesday 18th June.

Do I need an ID?

The government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at polling stations, A large proportion of individuals experiencing homelessness may not have photo ID, often due to the costs of application or replacement or the inability to keep their ID safe.

The Government has introduced a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’ for those without an accepted form of photo ID. These can be used to vote in some UK elections and referendums. If you don’t have an appropriate ID, you should register for a certificate by 5pm on Wednesday 26th June 2024.

Apply for a certificate now. https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
