“We urge the government to take decisive action to tackle the growing crisis of youth homelessness. More than 100,000 young people experience homelessness every year, but the impact is not just personal – it’s a loss of potential, which costs society billions, because without a stable home it can be almost impossible for anyone to hold down a job or continue their education.
“Further cuts to benefits will do nothing to help young people who are homeless to move towards employment and independence. Depaul UK is calling for urgent investment in prevention services, more accommodation with support for people sleeping rough, as well reforms to the benefits system so that work pays for young people living in supported accommodation. We support the government’s ambitions for a long-term homelessness strategy, but without action now homelessness will continue to increase, making ending it ever more difficult.
Depaul UK is part of a coalition of more than 100 charities calling on the UK Government to commit to a comprehensive strategy to end youth homelessness. This strategy emphasises prevention, better housing options, and fairer financial support to help young people build successful, independent lives.
