Every day, more than 350 young people become homeless in the UK. In London alone, youth homelessness is up by 41% this year, with many facing cold nights and unsafe conditions.
Jamie, from Middlesbrough, became homeless when he could no longer stay in the family home.
He slept on friend’s sofas or spent what little money he had on hostels and B&Bs. Wandering the street one night, soaked with rain, he felt he had hit rock bottom. Until he found Nightstop.
Watch Jamie’s video below:
“Hosts for Nightstop are some of the kindest people out there. I was able to have my first proper night’s sleep in ages. I was so relieved.” Jamie
Depaul UK’s emergency accommodation service Nightstop uses a network of trained and vetted volunteer hosts, ordinary members of the public who offer their spare room for the night, to keep a young person safe and off the streets.
This extraordinary act of kindness can represent a crucial turning point for a young person in crisis. Once safe, they can get help from our staff to find longer-term accommodation, and the support they need to achieve stability in their lives. Our aim is to ensure young people leave homelessness behind for good.
We have volunteers ready to welcome young people into their homes. But the costs of food, fuel, clothing, training and vetting volunteers and providing ongoing support from teams of staff, do come at a price.
That is why we urgently need donations if we are to transform young lives like Jamie’s this winter.
